Everyone:
With a little digging, on Friday morning we were able to find a large
file in
the Planning Office on a $5,500 grant given to the town in 1995 by
the
Massachusetts Historical Commission. (MHC) This resulted in the town
hiring
Christine S. Beard Associates of Topsfield, Massachusetts to prepare
and submit
nominations for a Fisherville Historic District and a Farnumsville
Historic
District. At the same time the Ethan Allen Gun Factory in North Grafton
was also
nominated for the Historic Register. The consultant's work includes
an extensive
printed inventory and listing of South Grafton historic structures
and buildings.
The Fisherville Historic District (1996--#96000056) and Farnumsville
Historic
District (1996--#96000052 and their approximate boundaries are listed
on the
National Parks Service National Register of Historic Places web site
for
historic districts in Massachusetts.

Grafton is also part of a Blackstone Canal Historic District, listed
in the
National Register in 1995 as #95001004
With this historical listing work having already been done for two of
the
three mill villages in South Grafton, and a walking tour brochure having
been
produced for Saundersville in approximately 1991, this important "pick
and
shovel" work should give us a significant head start in the master
plan / visioning
process for the South Grafton Blackstone River and Canal Greenway corridor.
As you are aware, we recently received word that the JHC BRV National
Heritage Corridor Commission has awarded the Town of Grafton a $15,000
grant for this
work, but it must be matched within 120 days by funds that the town
brings to
the table, either through other grants, private sources, or possibly
through
the use of Community Preservation Act funds.
