Photo Caption: A New Sign For An Historic Old Cemetery.
Here's another gem polished and rediscovered in the historic mill village
of
Farnumsville in South Grafton. Farnumsville Fire House Committee
Chairman
Ralph "Skip" Michniewicz, working in cooperation with Superintendent
Phil Johnson
and members of the Grafton Cemetery and Parks Department, has taken
on a new
volunteer beautification project.
A new sign, new trees and flowers were donated by Skip and are now part
of
the Farnumsville Cemetery, located on 1.5 acres of land on Providence
Road just
south of Harding Street. Historic Farnumsville Cemetery is generally
believed
to be the third oldest of the eight cemeteries in Grafton, predating
land
purchases for Pine Grove Cemetery (1846 &1849) and Riverside Cemetery.
(1849)
The oldest noted burial in the cemetery is a slate marker dated 1812.
Farnumsville Cemetery was considered the principal burying ground for
the southeast
section of Grafton during much of the 1800's until the larger Fairview
Cemetery
near the Grafton / Northbridge Town Line was built. Farnumsville Cemetery
is
believed to have reached it's capacity around 1890. Graves of four
United
States veterans are buried here among the estimated 200 burial stones.
