JOHN
OSBORN DIARY March 7, 1819 - September 19, 1821
This is the second volume of the
John Osborn diary that is known to exist, a transcribed copy of
the 1800-1802 volume is on this site. This volume was discovered
by Pat
Osborne Hines, great-great-granddaughter of John, the diarist
recently at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC
in the Southern Historical Collection item #3397-z.
The following pages contain a transcribed
version of a Diary written by a Mr. JOHN OSBORN March 7, 1819 through
September 19, 1821. The transcription and checking the typed text
against the original document was accomplished by
Jim Osborn, Suzi
Risher, Nicki
Osborne and Harold
Polk, to sent an email to any of these people just click on
their name and a email form should appear.
The format used in this transcription
is somewhat different from the original document handwritten by
John Osborn. In this version each day starts as a new paragraph
and the date of the entry is underlined, whereas in the handwritten
original John drew a line between the dates. There are no lines
in the text portion of the original document and in some cases the
text that went with a particular date is difficult to determine.
The persons names are typed in bold letters, and an index has been
generated after the pages were transcribed and has been and placed
as the last page in this presentation. An alphabetized index of
the people mentioned in the diary is in the back of this file, a
link to this index is provided below. The page number, as assigned
to the original document by John Osborn, is shown in brackets "[
]" at the top of each transcribed page. The capitalization
and spelling of the names and text is the same as the original document
as best that could be determined. Since the handwriting, especially
in this copy, was difficult to read your comments are welcome if
you disagree from the words in this transcription. From time to
time comments will appear in the text inside brackets, "[ ]",
these comments are not in the original document and are to indicate
a torn page or some other problem with transcribing the document,
to inform the reader that there is additional infomation in the
following page, or to show an alternate spelling of the word.
The 1815 Mecklenburg Co., NC. tax
list shows a JOHN OSBOURN (Stiller) listed in Capt. PETER RAPES
Company along with WILLIAM ALEXANDER, Sr., WILLIAM ALEXANDER, Jr.,
Capt. JOHN OSBOURN and JOHN BLACK OSBOURN. These persons may be
related to JOHN "STILLER" OSBOURN.
