Funeral sevices were held Friday at 2:;00 p.m. at the St. Lawrence Community Church for James A. Carter who died May 25, 1965 at the Hand County Memorial Hospital.  The Rev. Norman A. Conklin officiated and burial was made in the St. Lawrence Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Harold Horn, Jim Wilson, Floyd Oman, Dwight Chipman, Burrell
Collins and Lyle Droppers.  Named as honorary pallbearers were Fred Chipman, Earl
Kindred, Louis Stechmann, Don Rock, Frank Clegg, Ed Magness and Art Moon.

James A. Carter was born June 26, 1900, to Bessie and J. Henry Carter at State Road,
North Carolina.  He served in the Armed Forces during World War I.

He was married July 15, 1917, in Surry County, North Carolina, to Maude N. Key of Elkin, North Carolina. 

In November of 1917, he moved to Yale, South Dakota and in the spring of 1918 he moved to Hand County where he had his own implement business until 1959 when he retired.

He was employed with the South Dakota State Highway Department at the time of his
death.

He leaves to mourn his passing his widow, Maude, St. Lawrence;  seven daughters:  Leone Karge, Wells, Minnesota; Dorothy Marshall, St. Lawrence; Viola Lanz, Chamberlain; Lois Harris, Jonesville, North Carolina; Evelyn Fanning, St. Lawrence;  Rachel Rediger, Spokane, Washington; Dixie Young, Edmonds, Washington; and three sons:  James, Jr. St. Lawrence; Roger, Greensboro, North Carolina; Dale, Los Angeles, California;  33 grandchildren;  10 great-grandchildren;; one sister; and three brothers.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Virginia, his mother and father, one sister and two brothers.
