Wellston Streetcar Token

Draft Boards and Streetcar Tokens
"GOOD FOR ONE CITY FARE"

This token was given to my brother in May of 1943,  by his St. Louis County WWII draft board.  The Draft Board paper clipped it to instruction card for Induction.   He was to use it, if needed to report to Jefferson Barracks for induction.  Friends drove him instead.   (of course!)

This was in with some of my "old" keepsakes, I thought there might be a story in it.

This token was used on the St. Louis "Big Red" Street Cars.
When you could go almost anywhere for a dime. I used tokens like this on the Hodiamont, City Limits, Crow's Nest, Clayton, and Delmar lines.

This is an OLD aluminum Token for the United Railways Co. St. Louis. Token is in excellent condition -Token is dated 1919 on front which reads "UNITED RAILWAYS CO. ST. LOUIS 1919". Back reads "GOOD FOR ONE CITY FARE". Aluminum Token is 5/8" in diameter - roughly dime sized. Large "U" cut-out in the middle.

A photo of my brother, Albert W. Haefner, WHS Class of 1942, with some of his friends is on this Wellston High School, Wellston, St. Louis, Missouri web site.
