about "Mile House" history in early Wellston

George Rinkel's Six-Mile House was near Goodfellow and Dr Martin Luther King Drive and was a very important part of the westward growth of St. Louis and Wellston. Rinkel's Horse drawn street car brought people to his beer garden, and to see property for sale in the area that became Wellston. Early maps have the area named Rinkelville.

Loeblein's Seven Mile House was located at Olive Street Road and Sutter Avenue. It was a tavern, polling place and voting location, also a Post Office.   Many of the families in the south part of Wellston voted here.

Rev. E. F. Hutchinson property

( He part of the south side of Easton, Evergreen, Ridge and Barnet (Later Wells), includes where the 1938 - 1939 Wellston High School was built.)

Note the lots are only 25 feet wide and 185 feet deep. This is a typical city sized small business and home lot. Enough room for shop or dwelling on the street side, and at the back an outhouse and trash bin.   No room for a carriage path or carriage house.  The answer for some, buy adjacent lots. Most old Sanborn Fire Maps, show the 25 foot lot with a street address. Stores on this part of Easton Avenue sowed the original lots.  The "New" Lindy Hall at Evergreen and Easton was 3 lots and a partial wide, described down to the inch.

1878

The Franklin Avenue street car was horse drawn at this time.  Col. Rinkles Six Mile house was about Goodfellow and Easton (St. Charles Rock Road)

The Narrow Gauge Railroad (steam engines) on what became the Hodiamont tracks.  The St. Charles Rock Road Depot at that time was an uncovered platform. On this site the terminal we see today was built in 1901.
