History
& Achievements :
- John Colethread began his military life as a
member of the Chatham Division of the Royal Marines.
Listed
- as No 93 of the 100th Company. Transferred to the
24th Company , the 68th Company and finally to the 58th
Plymouth Company. Upon his arival in Port Jackson he
served as part of Captain James Campbell's Company.
Following his discharge he recieved a grant of 80 acres
at the Field of Mars , followed by another in 1794 of 30
acres at Dinner Point. This 30 acres he did not farm but
chose to give it up. He purchased a block of land at
Concord but again this block was not used. No record has
been found showing the presence of his wife on board the
" Lady Penrhyn "
- Ann Wise . Surgeon Bowes recorded a child
named 'John Colepits' as born on the voyage. There is no
record of his baptism or death in the colony, nor his
presence on the fleet. She married Thomas Smith in 1791
and had 3 children by him
Ann lived
with Joseph Hatton from 1800 - there is no record of
a marriage, although she was known as Mrs. Hatton in the
area. She had one son by Joseph The register for Land Grants records
another land grant to John Colethread, 100 acres in
the district of Evan (near Penrith). dated 5 Aug 1806.
