History
& Achievements :
Private Charles
Bennett began his military career as a member of the 50th Foot West Kent Queen's Own
Regiment . Charles would have discharged in
England and enlisted in the Royal New South Wales Veterans Company Regiment (; service in Australia ; 1810 -
1823 & 1826 - 1833) arriving
in Australia as part of the Number 3 Company Royal Veterans of
Tasmania 1826 - 1833 .
These men arrived in Van Diemans Land 26/8/1826 ship " John
Barry".
Following his discharge Charles applied for and recieved a grant
of land in the township of Launceston. These grants were
Wellington, Canning and Bathurst Streets . Charles is recorded as
travelling to the mainland , only to return and settle in
Launceston .
He joined the army at 14
and was discharged after being shot at the Battle of Boyanne (?)
in France at 21. He went back to Derby and became a hosier
where he married Elizabeth before joining the Royal veterans. He
had 2 chn in Derby Charlie and Eliza. Eliza married Watson
Prideaux. Other chn. henry committed suicide in 1899. Ellen
married a convict John Winrow. They temporarily moved to a
Warnambool where they had a daughter then back to Tas.
Thomas married Rose Sophia Anthony. Elizabeth married John Henry
Reed and moved to the Goldfields in Victoria.
