The Will of Leonard Wastell of Scorton............................quill

March 4, 1628. Leonard WASTELL, Scorton, gent. To be buried in the parish church of Boulton on Swale. To my cousin Thomas DRIFFEILD 40 s. To Mark WASTELL my son, £100, to be paid by my son Luke within five years. To my daughter Margaret WASTELL £100 in six months after her marriage or in three years, each to have £4 for maintenance till the money is paid. To Luke WASTELL all lands in Brompton and North Allerton. To John SWALDELL, my grandchild, £10. To each grandchild 6s 8d. To Luke WASTELL lands in Scorton for forty years, paying my son Mathew £10 per ann. for thirty years, then to son Mark £10 per ann. for ten years, after the end of forty years to my son John and his heirs forever. Luke WASTELL sole executor.

[A copy of the full document, obtained from the PRO PCC DocumentsOn-Line site, shows that the "cozen" named was Thomas DUFFIELD; mention was made of the testator's good friend Jerom ROBINSON and his son John WASTELL to be "Supervisors of this my last Will, unto whom I give eyther of them three Angells". The will was witnessed by John GAGE, ....... .....'s marke, and Mathew WASTELL.]


The KIPLIN HALL Archive, (ZBL) is deposited in the North Yorkshire County Record Office. In 1754 the Reverend Henry WASTELL of Simondburn, Northumberland, sold the Wastell Family properties at Scorton to the CROWE Family of Kiplin Hall near Bolton on Swale. Deeds relating to these lands of the manor of Scorton, form part of this Archive, including many documents relating to the Wastell family since the late 1500s. A selection from these documents appears below.

oldbooksInq. Post Mortem, dated 7 August 1631: Leonard WASTELL of Scorton – various recitals:-
Left to wife Ann, for life, then to son John, Pasture Close & watermill –
Left to Luce [Luke] WASTELL for a 40 yr term, then to son John, Cross Hills –
Left so that Jeremy Robinson has power to sell to pay debts.
Son Luke is Leonard’s executor, John his heir.
Jury confirm that Leonard held above property & died 25 September 1630; property held of the King as of the Castle of Richmond, not for knightly service.
