History

Taking time out to enjoy a cup of tea has always been fashionable in European countries. This custom was brought to America with the early settlers. Taking tea fell out of favor in America after the Boston Tea Party in 1773 when the Colonists refused to pay excessive import taxes. Afternoon teas were usually a light snack. High teas were more substantial. Since the dining hour in England was around Eight, high tea tided them over.
