The Doll Collection

In the late fall of 1988 The Dyersville Area Historical Society was approached by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schemmel of Cascade, Iowa. They heard the house had been purchased by the Historical Society, and wondered if their doll collection would be a nice addition to the house. Mr. Schemmel's family, in the pioneer days, had bought a mill from James Dyer and they had many fond family memories of these times.

The Schemmels and their only daughter had been collecting dolls "just for fun" for over 40 years. As many of the dolls had special memories for them, and many had been gifts, they were reluctant to sell them. We were pleased they thought of us and were delighted with having the dolls in the Dyer House.

Over 900 dolls of all sizes and types make up the collection. Many were purchased at farm sales and antique auctions. Some were handmade by Mrs. Schemmel. There are some really old Porcelain dolls, German dolls, a wax Charlie Chaplin and a nice "soft" group including Mr. Peanut and Miss Strawberry. The collector dolls include John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Shirley Temple and many Barbie dolls. To make the dolls seem at home, they are displayed with old buggies, tables, chairs, china dishes, cabinets, cradles and toys.

The upstairs, housing the collection, is furnished with old, fancy white iron beds, some with brass trim, great wicker pieces and furniture relating to early times

We thank the Schemmels for the gift of their dolls. We invite you to enjoy the collection.
