These blurbs go with two adds / Maps

The Canfield Oil Company was an
 Ohio-based firm known primarily
 for its lubricants. The company
 began gasoline marketing in the
years after World War I. This 1936
 map commemorates Canfield's
 50th year of operation.
This undated Canfield map was probably issued in the early Forties. In 1945,
Standard Oil Company of Ohio (Sohio) purchased Canfield and eventually
replaced the Canfield brand name at the company's 200 or so retail locations in
                                                          the northern Ohio area.

 Part of a web site:
auction did not obtain a bid on the entire 175 lots as one tract, and only sold 111 lots
individually. This raised only $600,000 of the $1.6 million owed. Major purchasers of lots included
Baruch Mahler, bond dealer; Henry W. S. Wood, President of Equity Savings and Loan
Company; George R. Canfield, President of Canfield Oil Company; Samuel Scovil, President of
the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company; Harry L. Vail, former Cuyahoga County
Commissioner; and two women, Mrs. Joseph DeRico, and Mrs. M.E. Delehanty, whose
purchases were headlined the day following the conclusion of the sale. The 64 unsold lots were
retained by the Cleveland Trust Company which contemplated selling them privately at a later
                     time.(21)

Dear Mr. Bolt:

In response to your request the staff searched the indexes to Common Pleas
Court Appearance Dockets, 1862-1896, but was not able to find any
references to civil litigation between the Marshall and Barkwill Oil
Company and the Standard Oil Company. The staff also searched through our
older histories of Cleveland and a variety of other miscellaneous resources
but did not find any information about the Marshall and Barkwill Oil
Company. You may wish to contact the Western Reserve Historical Society,
10825 East Blvd. Cleveland, Ohio 44106, to inquire about any records that
they may have about this company.

I am sorry that I could not be of more help. Please let our office know if
we can be of any other assistance.

Note: It looks like Standard bought the Oil business from Canfield, not Barkwill ! RBB
