A brilliant soldier, he rose through the ranks to command the army. He took control of England, Scotland and Ireland after the English Civil War as Lord Protector from 1653 until his death. The King, Charles I, was tried, convicted and executed for treason. When the Royalists returned to power, his corpse was dug up, hung in chains, and beheaded. |
