Ridding the country of the scourge of the Danes, his subsequent introduction of the shire system, and improvements to the systems of laws and of finance, laid the groundwork for his grandson ¤Æthelstan to rule as the first King of a truely unified England. He is the only English king awarded the epithet "The Great". |
