WASHBURN, Cadwallader Colden, General [1818-1882] -- American politician & industrialist

Member of House of Representatives from Wisconsin from 1855-61 and 1867-71; Governor of Wisconsin from 1872-74. He was also a wealthy trader in real estate, and became a major general in the Civil War. He and two brothers were all members of the House of Representatives at one time, each representing different states.

Pre-War Profession Lawyer, US congressman, member of Washington
peace conference.
War Service January 1862 Col. of 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry,
July 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, November 1862 promoted
Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded the Dept. of West Tennessee,
commanded Yazoo Pass expedition, directed a detachment of three
divisions of XVI Corps during siege and capture of Vicksburg,
commanded in the Dept. of the Gulf.
Post War Career US congressman, governor of Wisconsin,
and organized Washburn, Crosby and Company (now General Mills)
in Minneapolis.
