VAIL, Alfred Lewis [1807-1859] -- American telegraphy pioneer
Contents: |
He provided financing to S.F.B. Morse in the later stages (1837-1838) of development of the telegraph in return for an interest in the American and foreign patents. He invented the horizontal lever motion for the telegraph, devised the dot-dash alphabet, and built the grooved roller and automatic telegraph lever.
He also collaborated with Morse in demonstrating the instrument,
and was on the receiving end of the first message transmitted by telegraph:
"What hath God wrought!" (1844).
