Wiki: Elizabeth I of England Wiki

Elizabeth acceded to the throne at 25, in November of 1558, at a low point in England's history, and became in her forty-five year reign one of England's best and most loved rulers. The date of her accession was celebrated as a national holiday for 200 years.

With her accession, the persecution of Protestants carried on by her Catholic predecessor and half-sister, Mary I -- a/k/a Bloody Mary -- ceased. There followed a period relatively free of strife during which the arts, especially literature, flourished in England. This was the era that produced Shakespeare and Bacon.

Elizabeth wisely eschewed marriage, thereby avoiding foreign and domestic entanglements that might have drawn her or the country into dispute. She was not above using the possibility of her marriage to political advantage, however.

Her reign was an eventful one, marked by numerous events of significant historical import. Well-loved, she was nevertheless plagued by a seemingly endless succession of plots against her life.

Elizabeth was the last of the Tudor monarchs of England. She was succeeded upon her death by her cousin, James I, who was also King of Scotland (as James VI), thereby uniting the kingdoms of England and Scotland to become "Great Britain".  -30-
