A nephew of Jane Seymour [1509?-1537], 3rd wife of ¤King Henry VIII, he was son of Protector Somerset by his 2nd marriage; de jure Duke of Somerset (1552), but deprived of title and estates by his father's attainder; Created (1559) baron Beauchamp and earl of Hertford by ¤Elizabeth I; Secretly married (1560) Lady Catherine Grey, sister of ¤Lady Jane Grey, for which he was imprisoned (1561-1571) and fined £15,000; Lord lieutenant of Somerset and Wiltshire (1602, 1608); High steward of revenue to Queen Anne (1612-19) [wife of ¤James I].
