Name forms

The early kings of Norway, from Harald Fairhair who consolidated the country and is called Norway's first king (863-930), through the Union with Sweden (1319-1343/63) and the Union with Denmark (1380-1396), to the Kalmar Union (1397-1536). The succession was much complicated by bloody internecine wars, with kings and anti-kings -- like anti-popes.

While other Scandinavian monarchies were elective kingdoms in the Middle Ages, Norway has always been a hereditary kingdom. WIKI
