An altogether remarkable man, of the sort with which the fledgling Republic was blessed several times over in those days.

The terms he negotiated with Great Britain, in what is now called Jay's Treaty, over G.B. withdrawal from posts in the Northwest Territories (vic. Ohio), aroused bitter hostility in certain American quarters. It is now generally recognized that he acted wisely, granting compromises as the price of survival and avoided war with G.B. for a time.

1784-1790	U.S. secretary of foreign affairs, serving as secretary of state ad interim until the installation of Thomas Jefferson on 22 Mar 1790
1787-1788	Joined with Hamilton and Madison in writing the Federalist, explaining the new Constitution
1789-1795	First Chief Justice, U.S. Supreme Court
1794-1795	Negotiated Jay's Treaty, settling outatanding disputes with Great Britain
1795-1801	Governor of New York
