Papa Hemingway

He volunteered in a U.S. ambulance unit during WW I, having failed numerous times to enlist due to his youth. In that capacity he served with the French army and later with the Italian Arditi, was seriously wounded and invalided home. After 1918 he was the European correspondent for the Toronto Star. He was also the Paris correspondent for Hearst's news syndicate, and correspondent for the North American Newspaper Alliance during the Spanish Civil War. He was later a war correspondent in Europe during WW II. He wrote numerous short stories and novels, including the well-known A Farewell to Arms (1929), For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), and The Old Man And the Sea (1952). The last-named work won the Pulitzer prize in 1953 and a Nobel in 1954. In later years he fell apart and eventually committed suicide -- a disease that ran in his family.  -30-
