DOWNING, Charles [1802-1885] – American horticulturalist and pomologist
He and his brother, Andrew,qv
wrote Fruits and Fruit Trees of America (1845), long a standard work,
and were partners in a commercial nursery venture.
In a testing orchard, he developed and classified varieties of apples, pears and other fruits.
