Robert the Bruce
Scotland (1306-1329), King

Scotland's liberator and national hero.

After having previously supported Edward I (King of England), he made his move in 1306 by killing John Comyn, the Scottish agent of Edward's cat's paw, Balliol. While Edward was ailing, he arranged a secret meeting (1306) with Comyn, in Greyfriars Kirk, Dumfries. The meeting ended in disaster when the two men quarrelled and Bruce stabbed Comyn to death. Thus, he made enemies of King Edward, the Comyns and the Church for committing murder in a holy place. Nevertheless, he shortly after assumed the Crown and Royal Dignity of Scotland.

Initially suffering defeats and other indignities at Edward's hand, he fled to Ireland, returning in 1307. His spectacular victory over the English at Bannockburn (1314), brought to an end the Second Interregnum with the Treaty of Northampton (1328).  -30-
