Noted as one of the first U.S. scientists to apply the microscope to botanical research.
He was graduated (1832) from West Point,
and served as assistant professor of chemistry (1834-38)
and first professor of chemistry, mineralogy, and geology (1838-57) there.
As a botanist, he was the first to discover diatoms in a fossil state in the U.S.,
and was noted for his investigations among the minor algae and the crystals in plant tissues.
