As to the American origin of the family there are two traditions. One was that they descended from John Browning an emigrant from England to Virginia coming in the ship "Abigail" in 1621. The other was that the father of Francis Browning came from Suffork England, and settled in Maryland. It is certain that Francis Browning Sr. received a grant of land in Caroline Co. in June 1735. He was born about 1690. It was thought that Francis Browning Sr. married Elizabeth Lloyd, but records of Essex Co. shows his wife's name was Rachel. He may have been twice married.

Captain John Browning was born approximately 1588 in England. He married Elizabeth Demaron (b abt 1590) abt 1614. He sailed to America from Gravesend, England aboard the "Abigail" in 1621. He landed at the "College Lands" later known as Jamestown, York Co, VA. He finally settled in Elizabeth City, VA, where as a prominent citizen he served in the Burgess of Elizabeth and Mound Cities. Captain John Browning is acknowledged as the founder of the "Southern Branch of the Brownings".

(1-3) Joseph Browning was born ABT 1617 in England. He came to America after his father, aboard the ship "Thomas", leaving London on August 21, 1635. He settled at Jamestown and was reported to be the brother of William and George. Nicholas Browning is believed to be the father of James Browning, who was in Henrico Co., VA.  James is probably in Goochland Co., VA (which adjoins Henrico) in 1810. We do not know who Archibald's parents were but since he was in VA, and had descendents named Francis Browning. He could have been related to Francis who is descendent of Capt John Browning

(A1-4) Francis Browning was born 14 Nov 1753 Elizabeth City, Culpepper, VA. He moved to North Carolina with his father's family where he fought in the Revolutionary War, gaining the title of Captain. He married Elizabeth Vermillion and later the family including two children at that time, moved to Elk Garden Community of Russell County, Virginia in about 1780. Beautiful Elk Garden was his home for the rest of his 75 years; he died July 19, 1955 at his home at the age of 101 years 7 months and 24 days. At the first court held in Russell County on the second Thursday of May 1786, Francis Browning was named coroner of the county. He was three times sheriff of the county, a member of the state legislature 1798-99 and served as Captain of Militia of Washington County, Va.
Francis Asbury, first circuit riding bishop of American Methodism is reported to have lodged with Francis on different trips visiting churches in this region of the United States. Captain Francis was an active layman in the Methodist Church during his long residency in Elk Garden Community. At the time of this death, 1855, he left 262 living descendents. Francis and Elizabeth had eleven children, three of which died in infancy in Russell County.

(?-1-6) Felix Blakely was born 15 Mar 1821 in Jefferson Co., TN and died 13 Dec 1915. He came west when he
was 17 years old. Seven men in the vicinity built a flatboat and floated down to the Ohio river, where they took a steamboat to Blue Landing, Mo. His father, Joseph Martin, took up a claim near Platt City, and Felix worked for him until he was 20. He found that life too monotonous so he went to Nodaway Co., MO. and bought 80 acres of land for $105, but sold this and took up another
claim.

He married Ann Lackey 4 Jan 1844 in Andrew, MO and settled on a farm in Nodaway Co., MO. Between that time
and the Civil War he made a fortune at cards, and lost much of it and was a saloon operator. For 40 years he was said to have had a hand in every big game on the Missouri River, and never lost his nerve. On one occasion he won $ 5,000 in three hours. His wife, Ann, was a very careful manager, and took care of the large plantation, which had grown to 700 acres, with a large number of slaves. Felix was one of the best judges of horse flesh, mules , cattle and hogs in Missouri. There was an 1845 deed recorded between Felix and Ann Blakely and Martin and Sarah (Blakely) Noland.
Felix and Ann had nine children, all born in New Market, Platte Co., MO.

At the outbreak of the war, Felix enlisted with the South in 1861, was made a Captain, and saw four years of hard service, with battles at Lexington and Pea Ridge, although he came through without a scratch. He is said to have won $30,000 of Confederate money, which wasn't worth thirty cents after the war. Besides his place was all run down on his return, and the greater part of his fortune gone.

Ann Lackey Blakely died before Sep 1868 from a rattlesnake bite, leaving Felix with 9 children. She went to gather lettuce in the garden one Sunday morning, did not see the rattlesnake coiled in the bed until it struck her. Their daughter Jincy Ann Blakely b 11 Aug 1848 in New Market, Platte Co., MO was the great great grandmother of Wanda ( Land )Joyce. Felix was later married to Sarah Jane Shough, who bore him 6 more children.

He was a great smoker for years and had no notion of quitting on the theory that it might prolong life. Even in his nineties he was an avid reader, requiring no glasses. He remained very independent and self sufficient. He did have great trouble with his feet. They got so hot he could hardly stand it and would soak his feet in a bucket of cold and icy water and smoke his pipe until his feet were comfortable. In the summer his loafing place in the orchard could be found through a pile of shavings made with his knife. Possibly he whittled and thought of the "good old days" when he was known as one of the greatest gamblers along the Missouri River & reflected that he was the only one of them left.

He spent a number of years in Texas and was living in California at the time of his death in 1940. Arthur and Cora had two children:

14, 1959. He was married to Gladys Louella Schwartz (July 27, 1904) on May 15, 1925 in Manhattan Beach, CA. Felix was a carpenter by trade and later moved to California. He worked at Warner Brothers as a set builder, then went in to partnership with Archie Roscoe under the name of Roscoe & Land. Roscoe and Land were quite active in the Southern California area. They built El Toro marine base, a number of schools and many movie stars homes in the Bel Air area, including Judy Garland and Hedy Lamarr. They lived in Sepulveda and later built a home on Sherman Oaks Avenue in Sherman Oaks.
They had two daughters:

The family moved from San Diego to San Francisco in 1957 and to Boise, Idaho in 1968. Boise provided the family with a small town atmosphere similar to what Clint and Wanda had known in Douglas, AZ. Cliff and Lani took advantage of skiing, driving a car at age 14, and the general freedom found in a small town wholesome environment. Cliff was involved in De Molay and Lani in Job's Daughters, serving as Honored Queen. .

Wanda's life dream growing up in a family in the construction business and seeing so many beautiful homes was to build adream home. Following retirement Clint and Wanda build a spacious country french home on the Boise River in an area called Woods Island -Riverside Village. The home was designed by Wanda and turned over to an architect for scaling and final design.

Clint was raised to Master Mason on July 31, 1952 on Wanda's birthday in Crossroads Lodge in San Diego, accompanied by Wanda's dad, Felix Clifton Land. He took his Royal Arch and Commandery degrees in Palo Alto, CA in 1962 and became a Shriner in El Korah Lodge in Boise, ID in 1969. He belonged to the Players unit of El Korah, which put on many melodramas and did the ceremonial work and served as President of the unit.

Wanda was active in the Daughters of the Nile and was Directress of the Dancers unit for many years. Lani joined her mother as a Daughter of the Nile and a Dancer and the family obtained many pleasures from their Masonic affiliations. Wanda's artistic talents, zest for life, skill as a decorator and homemaker created a fertile atmosphere for the creative development of Cliff and Lani which further enriched the joys of the Boise Joyces.

(?-1-6-3-4-1-2-1) Clifton Claude Joyce Cliff and Lani both graduated from South Junior High, and Borah High School. Cliff attended Boise State as an art major for two years while working in an Albertsons grocery store. He then spent three years at Cal Arts in Valencia, CA. This school was founded by Walt Disney. Cliff graduated in 1979. He married Karen Famillian on June 10, 1979. Shortly thereafter they moved to Northridge, CA. Cliff and Karen gave birth to a daughter, Ashley Sara Joyce, on August 30, 1983. Their second daughter, Chelsea Rose
was born October 6, 1987. Cliff and Karen moved from Northridge to Woodland Hills after Chelsea's birth.

Cliff started his own company, Artword Graphics just prior to graduation. Both Cliff and Karen worked many long hours to keep the Company growing. They specialized in graphics art, design work, electronic typesetting and advertising layout work. After a couple of years, they merged with a printing Company to form Artword Granada, which was located in Chatsworth, CA.

Cliff bought an Apple ][e computer and became quite competent working with microprocessors both as a hobby and in his business. When the Apple Macintosh Computer was introduced Cliff bought one and tried his hand at developing a graphics software package. He developed one Called Mac The Knife, that was published by Miles Computing and immediately gained prominence on the Softsel Hot List. Cliff sold out his interest in Artword Granada and developed a second Volume of Mac The Knife, a collection of type fonts, which also sold well. When the Publisher failed to make royalty payments to Cliff, Cliff started his own publishing Company, which he named Dubl Click. He developed a number of products in this company including, Calculator Construction Set, World Class Fonts, Wet Paint, Pro Glyph , Mac Tut, Click Change and Menu Fonts and Go Figure, one of the first new products for the Apple Newton.

One experience Cliff and Karen did not relish was living through a 6.6 earthquake on January 17, 1994 which severely damaged their home but fortunately did no bodily harm to the family. They moved their business and home to Bend, Oregon June 1994.

(?-1-6-3-4-1-2-2) Lani Caprice Joyce received her Business Degree from Boise State in 1978. She was first runner up in the Miss Boise pageant and received scholarships for two years at Boise State. She was Honored Queen of her Bethel in Job's Daughters. She worked part time at a dress shop while in College. Upon graduation, she worked at Albertson's Credit Union to gain business experience while searching for a career position. She then joined Farm Bureau Insurance Company as a Claims Adjuster. She gained much recognition during the four years in Claims. In early 1983 she entered sales and was shortly promoted to Division Manager of the Boise office of Farm Bureau. She married Gary Denniston on July 12, 1986. She joined First Security Bank to help start their insurance department in January 1987. Lani and Gary moved to Richland, WA in early 1988. Lani accepted a position there and was made an investment officer selling annuities and investments for the bank U.S. Bankcorp and received the top sales award for the state of Washington in 1991. She was named Vice President in January 1994.

Gary had three sons from a previous marriage, Anthony Scott 20 Nov 1968, Timothy Glenn 16 July 1971 and Sean Patrick 5 Apr 1978. Clint and Wanda were delighted to gain three such nice grandsons from Gary and Lani's union.

(?-6-3) Francis Marion Browning was born 27 Jan 1842 in Knox, TN and died 22 Mar 1917. He is buried in the Vincent Cemetery Bee Spring, KY. He married Rebecca Bean 20 Oct 1862 Jackson, TN.

Frances served in the Civil War as a Union soldier in Company A, 8th Tennessee Mounted Infantry. He enlisted on November 22, at Carthage, TN and was mustered in at Nashville. He was mustered out on Aug 17, 1865.

Rebecca died Jam 1866. Francis next married Mary S. Barton 23 Jan 1869 Barren, KY. She passed away in July 1869. There were no children from this marriage. His next marriage was to Sarah Francis Elmore 2 Jan 1870 Holly Springs Church.

When Hiram Dit's wife, Rosa died, their two girls went to live with their grandparents, Francis and Sarah who owned about 50 acres in Edmondson Co. Sarah passed away in 1905 and Francis married Lizzie (Wills) Crowder in 1906 in Grayson Co., KY.

(A1-4) Francis Browning was born 14 Nov 1753 Elizabeth City, Culpepper, VA. He moved to North Carolina with his father's family where he fought in the Revolutionary War, gaining the title of Captain. He married Elizabeth Vermillion and later the family including two children at that time, moved to Elk Garden Community of Russell Co., VA in about 1780. Beautiful Elk Garden was his home for the rest of his 75 years; he died July 19, 1955 at his home at the age of 101 years 7 months and 24 days. At the first court held in Russell County on the second Thursday of May 1786, Francis Browning was named coroner of the county. He was three times sheriff of the county, a member of the state legislature 1798-99 and served as Captain of Militia of Washington County, Va.
Francis Asbury, first circuit riding bishop of American Methodism is reported to have lodged with Francis on different trips visiting churches in this region of the United States. Captain Francis was an active layman in the Methodist Church during his long residency in Elk Garden Community. At the time of this death, 1855, he left 262 living descendents. Francis and Elizabeth had eleven children, three of which died in infancy in Russell County. the eight children were:
