Papermaking

Another industry important to the growth of Hamilton was the papermaking industry.  Beckett and Laurie Paper was established in 1848, one of the first industries in Hamilton. It is believed to be the first paper mill established west of the Allegheny Mountains.  Champion Paper, founded by Peter Thomson in 1893, was at one time the largest producer of coated paper in the world.  Both Beckett and Champion Paper were purchased by International Paper.
