Northington Major Andrew -03/09/1792 North Carolina 10/23/1854 - - (Possibly in above brick crypt) Andrew was part of Stephen F. Austins third colony and received his first land grant May 28, 1831. he was the son of parents of wealth and had been given a good education. He was a trader of land, slaves and horses, and established a stagecoach line from Houston to Egypt on July 22, 1839. It was said that Major Northington "kept an open house, had a fine voice, a quick warm imagination, and was a brilliant talker". Andrew brought his two eldest children to Texas with him, Mentor and Rachel Ann, their mother, Priscilla Dawson had died before the family moved to Texas. Andrew was married four times, 1st wife, Zella Stevenson (m.6/1/1861), 2nd wife, Priscilla Dawson (m.3/26/1820), 3rd wife, Eliza George (m.7/16/1835) and 4th wife, Melinda. It is known that Andrew had several other children after coming to Texas. At the time of his death Major Northington had 14,208 acres, $5,567.00 in Do Notes, one wagon, five oxen, 10 head of stock, seventeen horses, five beds with furniture, one double barrel gun, one silver watch, one eight day clock and 500 bushels of corn. His only debt was a doctor bill of $200.00. As A pioneer of early Texas he lived a vigorous life, frequently exposed to the elements and at times suffered from an inadequate diet. His fourth wife Melinda died about twelve years after Andrews death and is buried next to him.

Came to Texas as a widow around 1830 with a large family group that first settled in Jackson County as part of the Third Colony under Stephen F. Austin. She received title to a Texas Land Grant on 11-20-1830 in Jackson Co. Headstone on top of brick crypt

Heard Harriett 1855 - 1858 - - - D/O and second child of Susan M. and Stephen Rhodes Heard II, Harriett was drowned in the Colorado River, which was near their home. She wandered off during the time the family was resting after the noon meal, and it is supposed she tried to gather grapes from a vine that hung over the stream. "She was buried in the Northing cemetery at Egypt. Her mother Susan died a short time later and was also buried at Egypt near her small daughter"

Northington Mentor 09/21/1822 - 09/01/1888 - Aged 85 yrs, 11 mos, & 10 days Entered into Rest S/O Andrew Northington, husband of Elizabeth Heard and father to William Andrew Northington, George Heard Northington Sr. and Mary Bet Northington. Civil War Veteran, farmer, rancher, received a head right of 640 acres in Jones Co. for hauling supplies to Sam Houston's army. Built the old Duncan Store around 1869, about the time Duncan's arrived in Texas and before forming a partnership with Duncan. Elizabeth on opposite side

Came to Texas around 1830 with a large group of Heards that first settled in Jackson Co. America's family settled in Virginia prior to 1650, America could be from the earliest "American Family" that is buried at Egypt. Dbl w/ George S.

Northington W.A.(William Andrew) 09/27/1851 - 04/23/1904 - Aged 52 yrs,6 mos & 29ds - Husband of Pauline Jones. Eldest son of Mentor and Elizabeth Northington. W.A. Northington is credited with the start of "big business" in Egypt. It started with apartnership that involved his father, Mentor, and the Hudgins family, which developed into mercantile, farming and ranching. When his younger brother, George Sr., returned to Egypt from school he loined the already esteblished partnership of W.A., Mentor and Green C. Duncan. He was also active in local politics. W.A. built his home, which remains today, next to the Egypt Plantation Home; today it is called Egypt House.
Connelly Gay Northington 11/29/1953 - 05/12/2001 - - - Youngest child of Harold and Nina Northington, and the granddaughter of George and Frances Northington Jr. Gay was known as a quiet spoken, kind and gentle lady, who was a very loving mother to her three young sons.

Mortensen Alfred 06/23/1905 - 04/29/2002 - - "Al" Married 02/07/1935 Al was husband of Virginia (Gin) Northington. Al was known as a "self made man". Al Mortensen had very little formal education and yet became very successful in the cinema industry. He was also known for his kindness and generosity. Dbl w/ Jessie Virginia

Northington Jessie Virginia 01/01/1855 - 06/25/1945 - - - W/O George Heard Northington Sr., Jessie was very intrested in family and community, and her home in Egypt was the focus of many great social activities. She traveled all over the world and was a firm believer in astrology.
Northington Sr. George Heard 06/30/1854 - 03/13/1938 - - - H/O Jessie Virginia Simmons. Second child of Mentor and Elizabeth Northington. After the death of his brother, W.A.. George Sr. continued and expanded the partnership with Green C. Duncan, which included several mercantiles, banks, farming and ranching. His wife, Jessie, played an active role in many of George Sr.'s business ventures. George and Jessie raised eight children in the Egypt Plantation HOme and Egypt House, all of which are buried in Egypt Cemetery.
Northington Ruth Virginia 11/02/1889 - 01/10/1901 - aged 11 yrs, 2 mos, 8ds - Little Ruth, as she is still known by family, was the seventh child and youngest daughter of George and Jessie Northington Sr. Several of her letters are included in the archives of Egypt Plantation.
Northington Josie J. Westmoreland 02/28/1878 - 03/05/1898 - - - The second child and eldest daughter of George and Jessie Northington Sr. died just a few months after her marrage to Reid Westmoreland. It is thought that her death was pregnacy related. She was a well loved young woman in the community.
Westmoreland Nettie E. 02/18/1880 - 04/27/1914 - - Devoted Wife, An Ideal Mother, Thy Will Be Done Nettie was the third child and second daughter born to George and Jessie Northington Sr. Nettie married the young widower Reid Westmoreland, after her sister's death. Nettie died just two months after the birth of her fourth child. She was a sweet, beautiful young woman, which her many letters in the Egypt Plantation Museum reflect.
Meriwether Jr. George Baylor 10/25/1904 - 03/17/1977 - - - George was the eldest child of George Baylor Meriwether and Mamie Duncan Northington, and the grandchild of George and Jessie Northington Sr., George Jr. was only twelve years old when his mother Mamie died. His mothers sister Sadie Northington helped raise him, although he lived with his father. George Jr. was father to George Baylor Meriwether III and Mamie Duncan Meriwether. George Jr. attended West Texas Military Academy and learned the profession of Civil Engineering from his father. He worked for the Texas & New Orleans Railroad Co as a surveyor and engineer until the great depression in 1931 at which time he became involved in cattle ranching with his brother, Will. In 1941 George Jr. obtained his Registration as a Professional Engineer and worked in Houston as a Field Engineer. During WW II, he served in the army as an Engineer. In 1950 he started a surveying business in Houston.
Meriwether Sr. George Baylor 10/12/1871 - 11/15/1948 - - - George was the husband of Mamie Duncan Northington. He attended Texas A&M University and was registered in the Mechanical course 1892-93 as a Corporal in the Corps of Cadets, 1st Squadron Co. "D" 2. In 1893-94, which was his final year, he was registered as a Bachelor in Civil Engineering and was listed under "General Honors" among the graduates. He was also a 1st Sergeant in the Corps of Cadets, 1st Squadron Co. "D" 2. On May 7, 1898 George joined Troop "M", First Regiment of the Texas Calvary, U.S. Volunteers under Col. Luthur R. Harr, he was appointed Fiorst Sergeant of Troop "M". While living in Glen Flora he was a designer of cotton gins and sugar mills. George Meriwether was well known for his designs of irrigation systems that lifted water out of the Rio Grande River and distributed the water by a network of canal systems for crop irrigation.
Meriwether Mamie Duncan Northington 11/27/1884 - 08/05/1917 - - - Mamie was the fifth child and fourth daughter of George and Jessie Northington Sr. For most of her life Mamie suffered from what is believed to have been recurring bouts of Maleria and spent many years off and on in Colorado and in treatment. She left two young sons, George and Will at the time of her death. Mamie's sister Sadie took on the responsibility of raising the two boys.
Meriwether Will Northington 07/25/1908 - 07/07/1968 - - - Will Meriwether was not quite nine years old when his mother Mamie died and like his brother George was raised by his Aunt Sadie. Will Meriwether attended Texas A&M University and under the tutelage of his Aunt Sadie became a leading South Texas farmer and rancher. He was a 32nd degree Mason with membership in the El Mina Temple in Galveston. Will is remembered as being quiet, well-mannered and sweet natured man. Dbl w/ Ednamaye Reese
Meriwether EdnaMaye Reese 12/09/1908 - 04/01/1992 - - - EdnaMaye was the wife of Will Northington Meriwether. She began a long and distingished teacing career in a two room schoolhouse at the New Vienna School. EdnaMaye never had children, but following in the footsteps of Aunt Sadie she helped raise her nephew JOhn Wynn. Dbl w/ Will Northington
Meneffe Sadie Northington 09/24/1883 - 04/30/1957 - - - Sadie Northington was the fourth child and third daughter of George and Jessie Northington Sr. Sadie Northington never had a child but raised both her sister Mamie's sons after Mamies death and helped raise the four children of her sister Nettie's after her death. Sadie inherited her fathers keen business sense and increased her holdings at Egypt after the death of her father. Sadie Northington was a very social person like her mother and kept an open house for all her family and friends. Her many letters, diaries and business documents are held in the archives at Egypt Plantation.

Northington Mentor 09/21/1876 - 10/26/1968 - - - Eldest child of George and Jessie Northington Sr.. Husband of Clara Beard. Father of Clarissa (Tot) and Josephine. Mentor was a farmer/rancher and horse breeder, and hosted horse racing events in Egypt. He and his wife Clara built the home across the street from the Egypt Plantation Home, which today is owned by his grandaughter. Dbl w/ Clara Beard
Northington Clarissa Beard 01/17/1880 - 12/17/1979 - - - W/O Mentor Northington. "Aunt Clara" was a well-known poet and artist, well traveled and a classic southern belle, very much the "Queen of Egypt".
