Jackson Stubbs

Wharton County Sheriff




Jackson Stubbs was elected as Sheriff of Wharton County on August 12, 1852 with 97 votes, but he did not serve out his term. He resigned but there are no dates in the state records.

Jackson Stubbs name is found on the muster roll dated August 14, 1861 under Capitan Veazey.The Wharton Rangers, which was a calvary arm of the service. Stubbs is listed as a 2nd. Lieut. saying he was elected June 29, 1861. He is found on the July and August muster rolls.

County of Wharton

Before T.J. Whitten, Justice of the Peace in and for said county D.C. Fielder who is first Sergeant in the company styled "WHARTON RANGERS" and upon oath says that A.A. McWillie Captain of said company and J.W. Veazey 1st Lieut and J.F. Lester 2nd Lieut. and Jackson Stubbs 2nd. Lieut. of said company who was all duly elected on the 29th day of June 1861. At their armory in the town of Wharton to fill said officers by the company.

Another letter from Texas State Library Archives Divison in Austin, Texas, Muster Roll No 616, states that Jackson Stubbs was Third Lieutenant on August 15th 1861 and that the Unit was actively commissioned August 21, 1861.

He served as Sheriff of Blanco County from 1892 to 1900 as per Texas County Sheriffs book.
