Mentor Northington

Northington. - Another one of the Texas veterans has passed away. Mentor Northington, the subject of this notice, was born in Christian county, Ky., Sept 21, 1822. He moved to Texas with his parents, landing at Columbia, on the Brazos river, May 1833; enlisted in the Texan Army 1836 before he was fourteen years old. In recognition of his youthful services, the authorities granted him a headright for 1280 acres of land. He was married to Miss Eliza E. Heard, Dec 23, 1843. She was the daughter of Capt. W.J. Heard and America Heard. his wife, of precious memory to all of the old Texas Methodist preachers now living. He returned to Kentucky in 1838, to finish his education, and was brought under the Campbellite influence and joined them. In 1853 he found that he had made a mistake and learned that no matter how pointed and sharp a sword was it was useless without power to handle it, so he embraced Christ under the blessed influence of the Holy Spirit, and realized that he was born again, created anew in Christ Jesus and joined the M.E. Church, South, at a camp meeting conducted by Bro. Wesson and myself in 1853. His life was consistent. He enlisted in the Confederate army in 1863; was a member of Sayle's battalion, and made a good soldier. He was a devoted husband and father, and a true friend. He has been removed to his home in that land that is afar off. He died at his home in Jones county, Texas, on Sept. 1, 1888, fully resigned to the will of his Heavenly Father. He left a devoted wife and two sons to mourn his departure.
