Major Andrew Northington

Died, at his residence in Fort Bend county, Oct 23rd Major Andrew Northington. The deceased was a native of North Carolina having been born in that state March 9th, 1792. In the year 1831 he removed to Texas, and shared in the exciting scenes through with the State subsequently passed. The subject of religion appears to have been in a great measure neglected by him up to the year before his death, still thew Spirit of God strove with him, and at a camp meeting, held on the San Bernard, Oct 1st, 1853, he bowed as a penitent at the alter of prayer. It was an affecting scene to look upon that sinner of three score years, thus humbling himself before God, while pious relatives and friends wept and interceded in his behalf. he did not at that time profess to experience the pardoning mercy of God, but he united with the Church as a seeker of salvation, expressing firm resolves never to give over the struggle till assured of the favor of God. he immediately entered upon a course of Christian duty setting up an alter for the worship of God in his own house, and boldly avowing in all companies and places the change which had taken place in his views and purposes. The disease which caused his death was abcess of the spleen. His sufferings for six weeks were very great, but he expressed entire resignation to the divine will. He appears to have been fully satisfied of his acceptance with God, and died in the hope of a glorious immortality. Another sinner saved by grace.
