DR. ENNIS A. MARTIN
Dr. Ennis A. Martin, Sr. was born on March 14,1883 to S. Maud and Lottie Coleman Martin, both school teachers in public schools of Wharton County.
Dr. Martin held a B.S. degree from Paul Quinn College and earned his M.D. degree from Meharry College, Nashville, TN. He taught school before becoming a physician. He was one of the first black doctors to practice in Wharton.
Dr. Martin married Miss Matilda A. Ward of Austin county and they had 8 children, 4 sons and 4 daughters. One son became a physician, Dr.Julius M. Martin of the John A. Andrews, Tuskie Hospital Institute of Alabama.
He practiced medicine in Wharton for over 50 years and died on May 5, 1971.

Dr. Martin was born March 14, 1883 in Spanish Camp (Wharton County) Texas to Samuel Mason and Lottie Chloe Martin. Both of Dr. Martin's parents taught school near Egypt, Nedra (near Egypt) Texas. School was seasonal, they followed the harvests, planting etc..teaching children as they came in from the fields.
Dr. Martin went to school in Wharton; later to Paul Quinn College (B.S. Degree) in Waco, Texas. He taught school for a while before entering medical school, Meharry Medical School, Nashville, Tennessee where he gained his M.D. degree in 1916. He practiced medicine in Wharton for over 50 years. Dr. Martin married Miss Mathilda A. Ward, from Austin county, Texas. They were Baptist by faith. They had seven children; four sons and three daughters. One son, Julius A. Martin is a physician in Dayton, Ohio.
Dr. Martin's wife preceded him in death. In 1970, Dr. Martin moved to Chicago, Ill to be near his eldest son. In failing health, he died in 1971 of pneumonia. He was buried in Wharton City Cemetery on Alabama Street.
Lottie Chloe Coleman, Grew up in Gen. Sam Houston's home from the time of being a small child. Dr. Martins mother taught school in Wharton County.
Samuel Mason Martin Dr. Martins father taught school in Egypt, Nedra area. They were early black educators in Wharton County.
Dr. Martin and both of his parents are buried in Wharton City Cemetery in their family plot.
