ATTENTION! TANCOOK ISLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL needs help!
The Tancook Island School Advisory Council has issued the following statement:
We need to raise approximately $2500 to cover the expense of materials and taxes to repair the Memorial Playground
at the School. The playground was installed almost 10 years ago and consists of a slide and a swing set anchored in a bed of pea gravel. There is currently a wooden border around the perimeter of the playground which keeps the gravel in. This wooden border has finally rotted to the point that it is unsafe and it must be replaced. The company "LittleTykes" makes polymer resin playground borders which can be used instead of wood. This resinous material is guaranteed for life and will not disintegrate, splinter or fade and the school board has given us the okay to use it. It is a bit more expensive than wood, but we will never have to replace the border again.
If anyone wants to make a donation they can send a cheque made payable to the "Tancook Island School Advisory Council" . The address is: Tancook Island Elementary School, General Delivery, Big Tancook Island, NS., B0J 3G0
Tancook and Little Tancook are 2 islands located 6 miles off the southern coast of Nova Scotia in Mahone Bay. These two islands are accessible by passenger ferry--the William G. Ernst is stationed at Big Tancook and makes daily runs to and from the historic yachting community of Chester.
In 1792 both Tancooks and Starr Island were granted to J.H. Flieger and George Grant. In 1829 thirty families of German colonists and French Huguenots, who had been brought over by the British Government, established their homes on the Tancooks.
Today, the population of Tancook Island is approximately 125 year round and swells to approximately 200 in the summer. The people make their living solely on the sea as inshore fishermen or ferry crew. Little Tancook has approximately 35 people, all subsist on the sea for their living as well.
