Thomas Oyler, son of Elizabeth (Osborne) Oyler - father unknown


Thomas Oyler was born 1767 to Elizabeth Osborne and unknown father (Possibly Thomas Pettit). This birth date is 2 years after Elizabeth (Osborne) Oyler's husband Thomas died. Thomas married Elizabeth Brayzyer 08 October 1790 in Hawkhurst.Witnesses: Samuel Oyler and Thomas Pettit. Banns were read 26 SEP 1790 Winchelsea, Sussex, England. They had 7 children (all born in Winchelsea). Spelling as shown in the Parish Register:

  • George Oiller- Christening: 03 Apr 1791;
  • Thomas Oiller-  Christening: 21 Apr 1793;
  • Elizabeth Oiller - Christening: 17 Mar 1795;  Elizabeth married Thomas Butchers at Guestling
  • Celia Oiller 20 Nov 1803. Married 25 May 1828 Thomas Hodgskin, who was later a police inspector, and they ended up living in Birmingham. She died in 1884.
  • Eliza Oiller 23 May 1806, her place of birth is given as Winchelsea, Sussex in the censuses. Samuel Dean (born about 1803) a stonemason, was named as the father of Eliza's bastard son.

Winchelsea Poor Law Letters. Letter from Thomas Relfe for Mrs Collins, Hove to the overseers of Winchelsea.

 24 Jan 1827 - I am requested by Mrs Collins of the parish of Hove to inform you that she has got Eliza Oyler's child to keep and as she [Eliza Oyler] is gone to London Mrs Collins will thank you to send her the money that is due. If the money is not remitted the child must be sent home. It would be much more convenient if you would empower some person at Hastings to pay the money.  For settlement examination of Eliza Oyler, 1824 see AMS 2330 folio 35; for maintenance order for her illegitimate son.

 9 May 1827 - Letter from Sarah Collins, Hooe to the overseers of Winchelsea.I send this to inform you that I have heard from Eliza Oyler and she wishes me to send the boy I have of hers to her. If you will be so good as to advance two months pay to me besides the two months due, I will get him clothed up and take him to his mother in London and I think by what she writes to me the boy will be removed [from] expense to you.

 Eliza and Samuel Dean later married and moved to Hull where Samuel died, aged 42 in 1845.

  • Lucy Oyler 3 Nov 1809, married James Edwards in Etchingham 27 December 1831 and then, after his death, she married George Veness & lived in Hastings.
