Pettit Name

Back to the Oylers of Kent

There were many links between the Oyler and Pettit families.

Some of the clues that Thomas Pettit may have been the father of Elizabeth (Osborne) Oyler’s three youngest children are:

Firstly:

A marriage between Mary Oyler and Daniel Pettit took place in 1737 in Sandhurst, Kent (just south of Cranbrook and Hawkhurst).  It is my belief that Mary Oyler could have been a daughter of Thomas Oyler and Mary Walters. She would have been born about 1715/1717 and would have been the brother of George Oyler. Daniel Pettit was born 1715, and died 1786. He was buried 13 Aug 1786 in Yalding, Kent, England. Daniel Pettit was the son of Thomas Pettit and Elizabeth Fairway. Mary Oyler was born about 1716 (unable to locate records for that period to substantiate my theory). She was buried 06 Apr 1786 in Yalding, Kent, England.

Children of Mary Oyler and Daniel Pettit are:

  • Thomas Pettit. 1738

  • Mary Pettit was born abt 1739 in Hawkhurst, Kent, England. She married John Sharpe 22 Jun 1762 in Sandhurst, Kent, England. He was born abt 1730.
  • Samuel Pettit was born in 1741 in Hawkhurst, Kent, England, and died 1773.
  • Elizabeth Pettit was born 1743 in Hawkhurst. She married John Barron 14 Feb 1773 in Yalding, Kent, England.
  • Susannah Pettit  (a.k.a. Susan) was born in 1745. She married Arthur Crockford 24 Oct 1776 in Yalding, Kent, England, son of Anthony Crockford and Ann Holford. He was born Dec 1741, and died 08 Jun 1782 in Yalding, Kent, England.
  • Sarah Pettit  was born Feb 1747 in Yalding, Kent. She married John Peckham 08 Feb 1769 in Yalding, Kent, England. He was born abt 1744.
  • Daniel Pettit  was born 1748, and died May 1827. He married Mary Clout 29 May 1785 in Yalding, Kent, England.Children:
    •  Sal 1785-1785
    • Susanna 1790
    • Thomas 1792-1792
    • Hannah 1795
    • Mary Anne 1802-1803
    • Elizabeth 1804
    • John 1805
  • Betty Pettit was born in 1750 in Yalding Kent
  • Hannah Pettit  was born 1752 in Yalding, Kent. She married John Sales 26 May 1778 in Yalding, Kent, England. He was born 1759 in Lamberhurst, Sussex, England.

 Secondly:

Browsing through the Hawkhurst Parish Register I found the births of:

1777 05 25 Daniel Pettit son to Elizabeth OYLER. (This was an illegitimate birth to an unmarried Elizabeth Oyler.)

DPO

This child would have been born while Daniel Pettit was married to Mary (Clout) Oyler

The only Elizabeth Oyler I could find who fits in this time period is Elizabeth, the daughter of George Oyler and Elizabeth Crampton, born 1749. George was the son of Thomas Oyler and Mary Walter and was the half-brother of Thomas Oyler who married Elizabeth Osborne.

Thirdly:

Samuel Oyler’s brother (or half brother) was Thomas Oyler (1767). At his marriage in 1790 the witnesses were: Samuel Oyler and Thomas Pettit. Thomas Pettit also witnessed the marriage of Susan Oyler to John Smith in 1793 Was Thomas Pettit a friend or a relative?

Fourthly:

There are many name similarities in naming patterns between the Pettit’s and the Oylers

Pettit children: Thomas, Samuel, Elizabeth, Susan, Daniel, Betty, Hannah, Mary and Sarah.

Samuel Oyler’s children: Thomas, Samuel, George, Hannah, David, Susan, Betsy, William and John.

I always look for name patterns when tracing families and certainly there are similarities between this family and Samuel Oyler’s children.
