1. John Sawyer born about 1803.
John married Jane Crutchley at Church by banns in the Parish of Hanwell near Brentford, Middlesex on 2 July, 1832. Both were illiterate and made their marks on the marriage register. Witness was Mary Ann Spellar. Another name for Jane Cruchley was Jane Cruchley or Jane Cruchly or Jane Chrichley.
Jane, wife of John Sawyer is known by various spellings of her maiden name. Chrichley was the name endorsed on her marriage certificate but since she and John were illiterate the actual spelling was up to the interpretation of the minister. Her maiden name on the birth certificate of her son Henry Sawyer was noted as 'Crutchley'. This accords with a marriage in the village of Shorne, Kent on 7 March, 1800 between James Crutchley and Mary Watson – the probable parents of Jane.
The 1851 census where she was married to William Hazell shows her having been born in Gravesend, Kent about 1809. The Gravesend baptisim records of the time show a family James and Mary Cruchley and children Henry John, James and Mary Ann. There is no record of Jane but the names of her Gravesend siblings also correspond with those of her own children.
It is reasonable to assume that the correct spelling of her maiden name was most likely CRUTCHLEY or CRUCHLEY.
John Sawyer died from Asiatic Cholera on 29 August, 1849 at his home in Old Brentford. Witness to his death was his wife Jane. Occupation at time of death was listed as 'labourer'. Jane appears to have remarried to William Hazell in 1850. The 1851 census shows that she and her children have taken on the name of Hazell (Hazele) In the 1861 census Henry Sawyer is shown as 'son-in-law' to William and Jane Hazell but this can also be read as 'step-son' to William Hazell.

These differ in some aspects to the names and dates of birth originally provided by Margaret Donovan from information noted in the Sawyer Family Bible that was in the possession of Jane Sawyer / Davis. The differences relate to the Christian names of ‘Mary’, ‘Ann’ and ‘MaryAnn’ and minor differences in birth dates. The first Mary Sawyer was apparently born out of wedlock and may not have been registered as baptised under her correct parents details. Considering that John and Jane Sawyer were illiterate (at least at the time of their marriage) and that the information in the bible may have been added some time after the actual event, it is reasonable to assume that the information in the parish register is more likely correct and this is now endorsed as the most accurate source. md.

9 F viii. Jane Sawyer was born on 22 December, 1841. Jane married James Rose at Brentford in 1862. Both she and her husband immigrated to New South Wales, Australia arriving on 16 December, 1874. They resided in Parkes, N.S.W. Jane Sawyer / Rose died of pneumonia at Bushmans Reef, near Parkes on 26 November, 1877. The informant was her brother John Sawyer and witness was Albert Genge. Then death certificate does not show her husband James Rose as being present. There were no children from the marriage. The maiden name of her mother is spelled 'Crutchley' which is believed to be correct. She was buried at Goobang Creek Cemetery on 27 November, 1877.
It appears that James Rose died in Granville, N.S.W. in 1916.

C of E plot 3357. Another name for John was Jack Sawyer. His death certificate records he came to N.S.W. about 1858.
John married Ann Andrews , daughter of James Andrews and Mary Ann Whitcombe , on 19 Aug 1873 in Wesleyan Parsonage, Currajong - Via Parkes N.S.W. Ann was born in 1832 in Bristol - Gloucester - England, died on 24 Apr 1912 in 166 Sutherland St. Paddington, N.S.W. at age 80,and was buried on 26 Apr 1912 in Waverley C of E Cemetery plot 3353-57 - N.S.W. Another name for Ann was Ann Millen.

Ann Andrews / Millen was first married to George Millen in 1849 at Collingwood Victoria. They moved to the N.S.W. gold fields with their children and in 1863 were located around 'South Lead' at Parkes / Forbes. George disappeared from South Lead in 1863 after burying his two sons, George (6) and James (4) who died of typhoid fever. (The event of the death of both children has been transcribed into the N.S.W. BDM listings as having the surname 'Miller' - the undertaker is listed as 'George Miller' in the death of James and 'John Miller' in the death of George). What was said to have been their graves were later located in a pine grove on the property 'Mandeville' at Parkes where church picnics are still held today. As records show that the boys died and were buried in Forbes there is no direct evidence to support that they were buried at Mandeville. Mandeville was a property owned by the daughter of Ann Millen, Esther Amelia Millen-Wood and her husband Albert George Genge and is located near The Welcome gold reef, Parkes. At the time of her husbands disappearance Ann Millen formed an association with John Sawyer and their first child was born in 1864. The reason they may not have married until 1873 could relate to a required term having passed until George Millen was declared dead. George Millen was never heard of again.
Marriage Notes: Marriage register number 57 on 19 August, 1873 at Currajong shows that John Sawyer, bachelor 38 old. of Curragong married Ann Millen - widow 38 old of Curragong. In attendance was Gilbert Henderson and Jane Austin. Wesleyan Parsonage. John Austin Minister. A record exists on the birth registration of their son John T. Sawyer on 2 November, 1864, that John and Ann married at Forbes on 21 December, 1863 which is conflict with their actual marriage.
Notes:
At the time of her marriage to John Sawyer, Ann Millen had three surviving children from her marriage to George Millen. Mary B Millen-Wood born 1850, Esther Amelia Millen-Wood born 1855 and William Albert Millen born 1862. These children were apparently taken on by John Sawyer and lived with him and Ann until they married or left home. Mary Millen-Wood married Walter James Ingrey at Grenfell in 1872, Esther Amelia Millen-Wood married Albert George Genge at Parkes in 1877 (she was living at the Sawyer property 'Currajong or Curragong' at that time), and William Alfred Millen married Mary Ann Nohey Hocking at The Welcome, Parkes in 1889.
1877 - John Sawyer was on the electoral roll for Bogan with his residence being Currajong.
1882 - John Sawyer was on the electoral roll for Forbes Council with his residence being at Currajong. He was also on the State electoral roll for Forbes..
1885 - John Sawyer is listed on the Return of Stockowners as having a property called "Curragong or Currajong" at Parkes of 10 acres holding 3 horses. Records indicate that he was both a clerk and a miner on the gold fields. It is not known how his wealth was acquired.
Late 1880's early 1890's the family moved to Sydney where Ann and John went into a hotel business which they had for some years. They gave their children good educations. All their children played musical instruments. There are two hotels in Sydney which were identified as possibly being owned by Ann Andrews and John Sawyer. One was on the site now occupied by the Hoyts Cinema complex in George Street and the other in Sussex Street was demolished about 1995. His death certificate describes him as a 'retired publican' of George and Park Street. There was a hotel at that location but no record has been found of John being its owner. It is believed he also owned a hotel in Paddington which was demolished in 1988. At the time of his death in 1898 John Sawyer also owned three houses in Paddington and houses in Camperdown and Waverley.

This differs from their actual marriage registration at Parkes in 1873. Ann also made no mention of having been currrently married to George Millen. John T.
