Ross / Rosscarbery Parish Register

A recent examination of the Uk 1911 census revealed the enumerators report for Denis Donovan and his family at 52 Pell street, Whitechapel.  For the first time a birthplace was recorded for in the town of Rosscarbery in the county of Cork, Ireland. The enumerator recorded the town as 'Roscoborough', Cork, Ireland.  Rosscarbery was originally known as Ross Carbery, Rossalettiri (Gaelic) or Roscarbery. It is situated on the coast of county Cork in the Parish of Ross.

A search was carried out of the parish register and a marriage between Michael Donovan and Mary Driscoll was recorded on 8 April, 1834.  Witnesses to this union were Jeremiah Regan and  Dennis Driscoll. The Rosscarbery baptism record of the seven children of this marriage listed the Townland of Reanascreena (corrected) as the place of residence. The exceptionally poor quality of the parish register makes transcription very difficult and is it understandable that different transcribers recorded variations of the Reanascreena name.  Reanascreena consists of rural land divided into small land holdings. It is situated eight kilometers north of Rosscarbery.

The Griffiths Index

Irelands Valuation office conducted its first survey of property ownership in Ireland from 1848  to 1864. This survey became known as "Griffiths Valuation" after Richard Griffith who was the director of the office at that time and it's importance lies in the fact that it lists almost every head of household for each county The survey was used to determine the amount of tax each person should pay towards the support of the poor within their poor law union. This involved determining the value of all privately held lands and buildings in rural as well as urban areas to figure the rate at which each unit of property could be rented year after year. The resulting survey was arranged by barony and civil parish with an index to the townlands appearing in each volume. Griffith's Valuation can be used as an excellent census substitute for the years after the Great Famine of the 1840's as censuses prior to 1901 were destroyed.

A check of the Griffiths list showed only one Donovan occupying land in Reanascreena in the parish of Ross, and that was a Michael Donovan. This was parcel 4A (a). He occupied an area of about a quarter acre which contained a house and garden. This was only a small portion of parcel 4 which may have occupied as much as twenty seven acres. It would appear that Michael was a tenant farmer who worked the fields of the large parcel and was renting the house and small garden plot on which is family resided.

Agnomen 'FRANKY'.***

It is difficult to know why the name of Franky came to be added to four of the baptism records listed above, as both a stand alone and as a combination of Donovan and Franky. It is likely that Franky is a form of nickname used by families of the same name, living in the same parish, to distinguish one individuals line from another. It is known that the later to be Finian leader Jeremiah O'Donovan, whose family took the agnomen of 'Rossa' identifying them as the O'Donovan clan from the town of Rossmore, actually was brought up in north Reanascreena by his grandparents, O'Driscolls.

From research I have found that the name 'Franky' is not known as a surname in Ireland nor is it listed in the 'surname' index of Rootsweb. Of the nearly three million parish marriage / baptism records listed in the Irish Genealogy web site the surname Franky does not appear as a marriage surname. Of the baptisms recorded on that site the name of Franky appears only eleven times, ten of those were recorded in the Rosscarbery district, and the remaining one outside. There is no family name Franky, Frankey, Frankie recorded in the Griffith index for whole of Ireland. The gap between the Donovan births is consistent to two years and there is documented evidence that Michael, Denis and Patrick only used the surname of Donovan. It is not possible to say at this time with 100% certainty that 'Franky' is not a separate family but, on the balance of probabilities I am satisfied that those children listed above are the children of Michael Donovan and Mary Driscoll of Reanascreena.

Exit from Ireland.

Millions of Irish people died during the great famine and one of the hardest hit counties was Cork. The circumstances of Michael and his family's departure from Ireland is not known. What is known is that Denis moved to London and married Julia Brian in 1858. Michael (snr) and son Patrick are recorded in the 1871 London census as dock labourers. Mary Driscoll died sometime between 1849 and 1871 . They never returned to Ireland.

London General Notes:

The 1871 London Census identifies Michael Donovan (64) and Patrick Donovan (23) residing in 6 Slaters Court, Blue Anchor Yard St. Marys Whitechapel. It is known from BDM certificates obtained that both father and son were born in Ireland and that they were employed as labourers on the London Docks, information that is consistant with that contained in the census.  An extensive check of the whole of the London Census reveal that only this Whitechapel entry could relate to them.  There is a difference of one or two years in the projected birth year of Patrick back from the census but this variance has been found to extend to a number of events in his life.  It is proposed that until proven otherwise the Whitechapel census of 1871 will be taken as relating to Michael and Patrick.
Michael was listed as a 'widower' in the 1871 census and it is speculated that his wife died in Ireland and that he and his son Patrick came to London to find work on the docks.  There have been  no other relatives or siblings located other than 'Denis Donovan' who was a witness at the wedding of Patrick and Esther.

London Marriage Notes:

Patrick married Esther Amelia Mooney , daughter of Lawrence Mooney and Mary Carroll, on 25 Dec 1873 in St. Mary & St Josephs Church - Poplar - London. N.S.W. General Notes:

Daniel left Latrobe Tasmania around 1892, possibly due to a break with the catholic church and his family. His father Patrick accidently drowned in 1889 and his mother remarried in 1891. Daniel travelled to Sydney where he met Emma Sawyer. Her parents had moved to Sydney from the Forbes area and her father, John Sawyer, owned a hotel at George and Park Street together with other hotels in Sussex Street and George Street. He also owned homes at 124/126 and 164/166 Sutherland St. Paddington as well as Camperdown and inner Sydney.

Daniel and Emma  reportedly married against the wishes of her family but apparently that was overcome. The marriage certificate shows that the consent of her parents had not been received as they were both under 21(Daniel 18 - Emma 19) but both stated they were over 21.

Paddington Notes:

In his will of 1894 Emmas father, John Sawyer left his properties to his wife and children. John Sawyer died in 1898 at 126 Sutherland Street, Paddington. All the Donovan children were brought up in 164 Sutherland St.
When the Donovans moved into that address Daniel, then a Draper by occupation, attached the name 'Latrobe; to the wrought iron front gate, a reminder of his rootes in Tasmania.
