SEPTEMBER MEETING
The September 25th meeting of the Lenawee County Historical Society will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Lenawee County Historical Museum, 110 E. Church St. in Adrian.
To kick off our exciting year of programs and special events focusing on Lenawee's involvement in World War II, Mr. Robert Elliott, passionate historian of Lenawee's storied military past, will be the speaker. He is best known for organizing an annual tour of Tecumseh's Brookside Cemetery, in which costumed reenactors portray our honored military heroes buried there. His topic will be a series of stories about Lenawee soldiers who served with the Allied Forces.
Following Mr. Elliott's lecture, there will be time to explore the museum's newest exhibit, World War II The Home Front. As always, our programs are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served after the program. Hope to see you there!

NEW EXHIBIT
WORLD WAR II HOME FRONT
December 8th, 1941 President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his infamy speech, declaring war on Japan. The life of every person in Lenawee County changed that night. The men left for the war, women went to work in the war plants that produced war materials, children helped in Victory Gardens, and people scoured garages, barns, attics for scrap metal which could be turned into valuable war materials. The new exhibit World War II on the Home Front, which will show life as it was during that time, will open to our members with a reception on Sunday, September 21st, 2008 between 2 and 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served and everyone is invited to bring old and young, members and friends.
The exhibit will feature a 1940s living room and kitchen, along with toys, sports, music, jewelry and clothing, information on the industrial growth during that time here in the county, the prisoner of war camp in Blissfield, the effects that rationing had on the people, be it gas, food, clothing. Posters depicting the various war related situations, along with the names of all the service people who lost their lives fighting for the four freedoms that President Roosevelt felt the American people should live by: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Want, Freedom of Worship, and Freedom of Fear.
Please spend some time enjoying this time in our history and visit the Lenawee Historical Museum on Sunday, September 21st between 2 and 4 for the Members Reception. This year-long exhibit can be viewed during regular museum hours: Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Research Web Site:
Footnote.com
The Footnote.com web site displays images of original American History documents. I looked at Abraham Lincoln’s original notes for the Gettysburg Address and papers from the American Revolution War era. When you register a user name & password, you can leave comments and observations about the various images. This is a great web site for viewing the actual documents that make up American History.
