wife, Josephine Tisher, whom he married in 1934 and she died in 1967.

Assembly of God Church, a WW II Army veteran; was a heavy equipment mechanic
and welder for various contractors and member of the International Union of
Operating Engineers, Local 18. He worked
in the oil field for several years with local drilling contractors following
his military service.
Surviving are his wife, Helen L.
Breese Vanwy, Newark; two daughters, Mrs. George (Janet) Fisher, Thornville,
Mrs. Brice (Donna) Shumaker, Newark; two sons, Ferrell, Jr. and his wife, Kathy
Vanwy, Newark, Charles E. Mason, Newark; brother Kenneth Vanwy, and his wife
Betty, Clearwater, Fla.; sister-in-law, Wilma Jean Vanwy, Heath; nine
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, Nicholas and Sabina Moose Vanwy; a brother, Donald; sister, Hazel.

She was born April 27, 1902, near Lewisville, daughter of
the late John Hamilton Billman and Sarah Elizabeth Kelly Billman.
She was a retired teacher, having taught 17 years in Monroe
County Schools. She was a member of the

Arsenal, prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Sea Bea
Division during World War II. He was a self-employed building contractor. He

veteran, having served in World War II and the Korean War. He was a Methodist

He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva M. (Hayes)
Leasure, on August 3, 1982; two sons, Kim and Greg Leasure; three brothers,

Church, where he formerly served as Sunday school superintendent, was a member
of the Church choir and served on several committees for many years. Also, he
was a former member of Woodsfield Village Council and the Board of Public
Affairs, a former member of Knight of Pythian Lodge 338, Woodsfield, and an
honorary member of Monroe County Trustees Association.
Mr. Wells was preceded in death by his
wife, Ruth Peoples Wells, on Aug. 22, 1989; two brothers, Harold Wells and
Lawrence Wells.
He leaves two daughters, Charlotte
(Don) Blair of St. Clairsville and Eileen (Carl) Farwell of Knoxville, Tenn.;
three sisters, Ruth Sprout of Pleasant City, Florence Beebe of Derwent and

She was born in Paden City, W.Va., on
Dec. 25, 1917, daughter of the late Ida Barbara (Winkler) Paden and Earl
Okey. Mrs. Fankhauser was a retired
beautician and former owner/operator of the former Claribel’s Beauty Shop in
Woodsfield. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Woodsfield and
a member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 5303, Woodsfield.
In addition to her parents, she was
preceded in death by her husband, Kline Fankhauser; five sisters, Martha
Virginia Paden in infancy; Flora Chapman, Betty Renner, Hazel Cox and Mary
Katherine Renner; and four brothers, Clarence Paden, Ralph Paden, Russell Paden
and Ross Paden.

for the Green Thumb Program at the Woodsfield Municipal Building.
She was preceded in death by her

WOODSFIELD — Roy A. Horner, 82, of
Holbrook, N.Y., formerly of Woodsfield, died Thursday (May 31, 2001) in New
York. He was born May 17, 1919, in
Wheeling, W. Va., son of the late G.A. and Ila Horner. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after
serving 25 years. He was a member of the Ohio American Legion, Woodsfield
American Legion Post 87, the Forty and Eight Club of Korean Veterans and a
member of the Woodsfield Presbyterian Church.
He leaves his wife, Sarah V. Dennis
Horner of Holbrook; a daughter, Mrs. Angelo (Jean Ann) Sparacia of New York;
four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Molina of
Cleveland and Helen Norton of Warren; and a brother, Edgar Horner of Tipp City.

He was born March 16, 1918, in Swazey,

a member of Lewisville United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his first
wife, Garnet (Kehl) Bach, in 1964; a brother, Ralph Bach; and a sister,
Madeleine McGinnis.
He leaves his wife, Ethel (Griffin)
Gardner Bach, whom he married Oct. 21, 1967; a daughter, Mrs. Howard (Cheryl)
Handschumacher of Belpre; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Larry (Donna) Ullman of
Graysville; a stepson, Ronald (Helen) Gardner of Chambersburg, Pa.; three
grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; five

WOODSFIELD — Mary Opal Starr, 90, of Woodsfield, died Wednesday (June 6, 2001)
at Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Oct. 6, 1910, in Monroe County,
daughter of the late Clarence Edward and Clara Mary (Paulus) Starr. Miss Starr retired from Farmers Home
Administration, Department of Agriculture.
She was a member of United Methodist
Church of Woodsfield, O. E. S. Chapter 268, Woodsfield, and the Pythian
Sisters. She was a longtime volunteer
for the American Red Cross.
She was preceded in death by two
brothers, Roy and Vernon Starr; a sister, Edith Dixon; and an infant sister,
Helen Lenora Starr.
She leaves two brothers, Ralph E.
Starr of Ft. Pierce, Fla., and Clarence A. (Tiny) Starr of Norton; a sister,
Lucy E. Mallett of New Carlisle; three sisters-in-law, Doris Starr of
Wadsworth, Helen Starr of Woodsfield, and Fern Starr of Norton; a

at her home. She was born Jan. 4, 1925,
in Monroe County, daughter of the late Homer and Emma (Bates) Nalley. Mrs. Davis was a former driver for the Monroe
County Senior Citizens Transport. She was a member of Richfork Church of Christ
and Woodsfield VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by a son,
James Davis; three brothers, Mike, Herb and John Nalley; and two sisters,
Dorothy Davis and Edna Daugherty; and Edwin Davis.
She leaves a son, Ronnie (Dianna)

Christman. Mrs. Burkhart was a member of
St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lewisville.
She was preceded in death by her

Laura Kahrig; two brothers, Arthur and Clarence Claus.

Beardmore, 79, of Woodsfield, died Tuesday (June 19, 2001) at Monroe County
Care Center, Woodsfield. He was born
April 8, 1922, in Malaga, son of the late Stephen and Nora (McMullen)
Beardmore. Mr. Beardmore was a retired
farmer and carpenter. He was a member of Woodsfield Church of Christ,
Woodsfield.
He was preceded in death by two
brothers, Denzil Beardmore and Leland Beardmore.
He leaves his wife, Nada Eileen
(Saffell) Beardmore, whom he married Oct. 20, 1946; a daughter, Mrs. Herman
“Eddie” (Marilyn) Martin of Woodsfield; two sons, Ronnie Lee (Kathy) Beardmore
of Woodsfield, and Thomas Brent Beardmore

on June 21, 2001. He was born September 4, 1927, in Graysville, Oh. to the late
Greal and Mabel (Givens) Harman. He attended Graysville High School and then
Marietta College. Richard married Janice Lee Kahrig of Marietta in 1954 and
they moved to Columbus. He retired from ABEX Denison Corp. He was a member of
Shady Lane Presbyterian Church. He will be forever missed by his wife, Janice
and his children, Cindy Harman, Jody (Philip) Morgan and Beth (Jeff) Lucas; his
grandchildren, Erynne, Benjamin and Emilee Morgan, Joshua, Eli and Andrew
Lucas; foster
granddaughter, Nikki; also surviving with memories that only brothers and
sisters can share are his sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Charles

93, died Friday (June 22, 2001), at the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation
Center, Woodsfield. She was born Jan. 5,
1908 in Woodsfield, daughter of the late Benjamine and Catherine (Schumacher)
Paulus. Mrs. Paulus was the owner and
operator of the former Virginia’s Dress Shop and co-owner of the former B.F.
Paulus Hardware Store, both of Woodsfield. She had also been employed in the Monroe
County Auditor’s office in her early years. She was a member of St. Sylvester
Catholic Church, Woodsfield. She was
preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Clarence; and one niece.
She leaves one sister, Martha
Sciortino of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Betty Paulus of Woodsfield; two
nephews, Frank Paulus of Woodsfield, and Ralph Paulus of Marietta; and one
niece, Marilyn Paulus of Orlando, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her
husband, Jacob A. Scott, who died April 26, 1972; four brothers, Arland Durbin,
Jr., Charlie Durbin, Jacob Alando Durbin and James Robert Durbin; two stepsons,
Paul E. Scott and Delmas D. Scott; a stepdaughter, Vera E. Pedicord; and a
grandson, Keith A. Scott.

Scott of Louisville; two stepsons, Junior S. Scott of Cuyahoga Falls, and Guy
E. Scott of North Canton; a sister, Zelda Cline of Vermillion; and two

WOODSFIELD — Lester Wayne Scarbro, 45, of Summerfield, died Thursday (July 12,
2001) at his home. He was born March 21,
1956, son of Edith (Parsons) Scarbro Brooks of Woodsfield, and the late Leonard
Ray Scarbro. Mr. Scarbro was a former
construction worker and worked odd jobs in the area. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a Protestant
by faith.
He was preceded in death by two
sisters, Jeanie Carpenter and Loretta Scarbro.
He leaves two sons, Matthew Schafer
and Timothy Scarbro, both of Marietta; three sisters, Connie Lindell of
Lewisville, Thelma Sindelar of Barberton, and Margie Davis of Jerusalem; two brothers,
Leonard Leroy Scarbro and Daiton Scarbro, both of Rinard Mills; several nieces
and nephews.

WOODSFIELD — Glen David Bishop, 77,
of Lewisville, Stafford Community, died Saturday (July 14, 2001) at his home.
He was born June 2, 1924, in Stafford, son of the late Earl and Elva (Stallings)
Bishop. Mr. Bishop was a former foreman
for Union Slag Co. in Marietta, and a 32-year employee of No. 1 and 2 Gravel
Pit in Devola.He was also a former coal truck driver, a farmer and former
owner/operator of Hi-Lo Wine Cellar in Marietta. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in
World War II. He was a lifetime member American Legion Post 64, Marietta.
He was preceded in death by a
brother, Wayne Bishop. He leaves his
wife, Violet E. (Gray) Bishop, whom he married April 25, 1958; a son, William
L. Belleville and friend Carol Seese of Marietta; two daughters, Nancy Kaye
Martin of Mesa, Ariz., and Geneva Forshey and friend Wayne Johnson of
Lewisville; two sons by a previous marriage; two sisters, Mrs. Tom (Mary)
Truelson of Newark and Shirley Sills of Columbus; two brothers, Don (Velma Lee)
Bishop of Cambridge and Jim (Blanch) Bishop of Zanesville; eight grandchildren;
18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Brown was a retired businessman and a former school
teacher. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War.
