LOCATIONS OF SELECTED SITES

The following are locations of selected sites made using a Global Positioning System (GPS) unit.  All latitudes and longitudes (L/L) are given in degrees and minutes.  Minutes are given to the third decimal place and are generally within about 20 feet of the true location.  Elevation is measured in feet above sea level. Elevation measurements are usually within 30 feet of the true elevation. For more information about where these data come from and how you can include your own data, click here.  For more information about Latitudes and Longitudes and their relationship to the GPS and this database, click on the highlighted words “Latitudes and Longitudes” in this sentence.  For information about how you can use L/L data to locate specific sites, click here.

Cemetery, (Farnsworth)* Cemetery (Site # 217)

Elevation: 1114’ (corrected to ground level)

Latitude: N 39 o 43.277’

Longitude: W081o 13.504’

Description: This measurement was made on top of the gravestone of Mary Worth died (month not readable) 28, 1811, aged 47 years 10 months and 1 day.  The name of this cemetery was unknown to me (R. Harrington) at the time this measurement was made.  I subsequently was told by Dennis and Ruth Weber, who own land nearby, that the cemetery was cleared a few years ago by an old man named Mr. Farnsworth (now deceased) and that the Trustees now keep it maintained.  I have used the name “Farnsworth Cemetery” as a temporary name because the old man named Farnsworth who cleared the cemetery of brush and trees claimed that his kin were buried there and that the cemetery name was the Farnsworth Cemetery.  This cemetery can be found by starting at the intersection of Ohio Route # 78 and Monroe County Route # 145 in Lewisville, Ohio; continue southwest for about one mile (approximate) on Monroe County Route # 145 (in the direction of Stafford) to Monroe County Route # 77.  Turn left onto Rt. 77 and go about one-half mile to Monroe County Route # 17.  Go right on Rt. # 17 for about 1˝ miles to where Monroe County Route # 99 intersects Rt. # 17.  Turn right onto Rt. # 99 and proceed about three quarters of a mile.  This stretch of road on Rt. # 99 is known locally as Smith Hill.  At the top of Smith Hill, a small un-numbered dirt road or lane turns off to the left.  This road will accommodate an automobile in dry or frozen weather but in wet weather, maybe not. This cemetery is out this road about a quarter mile, on top of a knoll on the right side of the road.  The cemetery cannot be seen from the road.  Note:  As of the year 2004, there is an abandoned house on the left almost immediately upon entering this un-numbered road.  Proceed along this road until you come to a hunting trailer on the left.  At this point, you have passed the cemetery maybe 100 yards or so. All of the distances given in this description are rough estimates – allow for possible significant error.

Home of the late Jackson, Carl and Wilene (Young) Jackson (Site # 076)

Elevation: 1281

Latitude: N 39 o 45.487

Longitude: W081o 11.450

Description: This measurement was made on the concrete lid of a cistern located at the North-Eastern corner of and about 10 feet from the Jackson house.  This house is located about 1 mile east southeast of Lewisville, Ohio.  [Note: replicate measurements will be made of this location to secure a measure of the error associated with the latitude, longitude and elevation measurements.]

Measurement made on September 30, 2002 in the morning by Richard Harrington

Approximate Accuracy of Lat/Long as stated by the GPS device:

(The following note was made on July 14, 2003)  Measurement made on the cistern lid at the Jackson Farm.  The Jackson farm is located 1 mile east of Lewisville, Ohio and about 6 miles west of Woodsfield, Ohio and about 0.1 mile south of Rt # 78 on a road called “Sixteen.”  (Note: The picnic table on which all of the Jackson Farm Cistern measurements have been made is sitting on top of the concrete cistern lid.  Beginning about this date or perhaps a month or two earlier, the table has been moved about 3 feet toward the north-north east.  So, a shift in the L/L could reflect this movement.)

(The following note was made on Sept. 20, 2003)  Typically, the measurement was made on a wooden table that is about 3 feet above the cistern lid and the ground level.  The location is about 2 feet east of the center of the lid, and about centered in the north/south dimension of the lid.  The lid measures about 15 feet in the north/south direction and about 12 feet in the east/west direction.  The center of the lid is 12 feet from the house and the center of the lid is about one foot north of the northern wall of the house.  The north/south and east/west axes of the cistern lid are the same orientation as the same axes of the house.  The axes of the house and cistern lid are not truly aligned with true north/south and east/west.  The front of the house faces predominantly south and slightly west. This is caused by the north/south axis of the house (the north/south axis of the house is perpendicular to the crown of the house) being about 10 degrees off true north/south.

The City of Wheeling, West Virginia, USA is located at this intersection, although this is probably not the geographical center of the City. The objective of making this measurement was to have the latitude and longitude coordinates of a reference point on earth that is not likely to change over the next several decades or possibly centuries. Such reference points are needed for subsequent users of this data to be able calibrate to some fixed points on earth that can then be used to apply corrections to the other locations in this database if they are needed.

Reference - intersection of Captina Creek into the Ohio River (Site # 064)

Elevation: 672

Latitude: N 39 o 51.567

Longitude: W080 o 48.073

Description: Measurement made at the intersection of the southern (about), down- stream bank of Captina Creek and the northern bank of the Ohio River, Ohio, USA. At the time of the measurement, a large, cut, 4 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet stone rested on the corner of this point. The measurement was made on this stone.   Note: While this stone is large and heavy, it could be moved and even rolled into the river with enough deliberate force or as the result of erosion. The small town of Powhatan Point is located at this point. This point is about 0.9 miles into Belmont County, Ohio, USA, as measured in a perpendicular direction from the common boundary between Monroe County and Belmont County.
