Among the several ongoing projects within the MCC of OGS is one aimed at identifying and inventorying all of the cemeteries and their monuments within the County. Decades of exposure to the elements has taken its toll of many monuments, particular those made of limestone that were so popular in centuries past. With the occurrence of 'acid rain,' a product of moisture in the air absorbing carbon dioxide and other acidic gases, the rate at which many of the monuments in our older cemeteries are slowly dissolving has increased drastically. Within a few more years many of the monuments will no longer be readable. One of our most urgent projects is to locate all of the public and private cemeteries and inventory the monuments they contain.

This labor of love can use all of the help that it can get. The work is exciting and provides an excellent opportunity to commune with nature while doing a real service for our ancestors and the community. If you are aware of any remote public or private cemeteries that may be on the verge of being forgotten, you are encouraged to contact an officer of the MCC of OGS and give them the location so that it might be included in the project. Also, if you would like to assist in this worthy effort please contact an officer of the MCC of OGS to volunteer you services.
