David James Lancaster

Source: Marietta Times, dated Saturday, April 26, 2003 Woodsfield teen dies in crash on Ohio 26
David James Lancaster, 15, of Woodsfield, a freshman at Monroe Central High School, was killed after school Thursday, two miles north of Woodsfield on Ohio 26, when he apparently lost control of the car he was driving and struck a tree. Two passengers, a boy and a girl, also minors, were injured in the one-car accident, but treated and released, one at a Columbus hospital, the other at Barnesville Hospital.  The accident was reported at 3:35 p.m. by a nearby resident who heard the crash.
Lancaster did not have an Ohio driver's license or even a temporary permit, Trooper Joe Weaver, of the St. Clairesville post of the Ohio Highway Patrol, investigating officer, said Friday. Also, Lancaster was not wearing a seat belt, likely the reason he was partially ejected from the 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser he was driving.  "The thing is, we don't think he would have been killed, or even seriously injured, if he had been wearing a seat belt," Weaver said.  The officer said head injuries as a result of the crash are likely the cause of death.
One of the boy's passengers remembers wearing a seat belt; the other had no recollection, the officer said. Their injuries were minor, although one was taken to Columbus by Life Flight before being treated and released.  Weaver said at this time excessive speed is suspected as the cause of Lancaster losing control.  "It looks like he lost control of the vehicle, overcorrected, rolled and went off the right side of the road, finally struck a tree, and the car ended up on its top," the officer said.
Friends will be received at Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield, from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with services at 1 p.m. Monday. Pastor Bob McQuellen is officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery.
