Was variously an office boy, printer's devil, schoolteacher, typesetter and journalist. He served as a hospital nurse during the Civil War [1862-1864], which experience much affected him. Published Leaves of Grass [1855], subsequently revised in many editions, to unfavorable reviews. Appreciation of his genius came slowly^* — except in his own mind; He knew he was a genius long before anyone else figured it out.
