PARSONS, Mary (Bliss) [1620-1712] -- American accused witch

née BLISS, Mary

A Springfield, Massachusetts woman and wife of a prominent citizen, Mary went to court twice -- first as the plaintiff in a 1656 slander suit against a woman who had rumoured her witchcraft, and again in 1674 as a defendant when she was accused of witchcraft. She was vindicated both times.

The dispute arose from a feud between neighbors. The Bridgemans were jealous of their neighbor's good fortune -- and her haughty mien!  -30-
