My Oregon Trail Families
a link to Oregon Trail web page

All of the families listed on this page are related to my family lines in one way or another.  I am a direct descendant of some *; related only by marriages to others.  These people took a great risk making the trek to the Oregon Territory by wagon train; many died on the journey. Cholera bacame a real threat as more people traveled the Oregon Trail(s).

I will be happy to add your corrections and additions to this list, but only if they relate to my kin.  Your comments are welcome.

Your web master,  Cecil Houk 1939 - 20??   [email protected]

The surname list below is by no means complete, but it will allow you to "jump" to the major family group.  Many other surnames are included in the lists of children and their spouses.  I will update this data as I uncover information about these people.  There is a link in each family group that will take you to my WorldConnect Project [sic] (RootsWeb.Com) GEDCOM that opens in a new window.  You have posted your GEDCOM on WCP, haven't you?

In my WCP GEDCOM all persons born after 1910 (and known or assumed to be still living), will show up as "Living - Surname", and all data will be blanked.  You have posted your GEDCOM on WCP, haven't you?

I have been told by one person that they removed their GEDCOM from WCP because they were overwhelmed by the e-mail that resulted from it.  I thought that was the idea.  You have posted your GEDCOM on WCP, haven't you?

I have been contacted by many cousins who have provided me with update information for my family tree because of my WCP GEDCOM.  You have posted your GEDCOM on WCP, haven't you?  And then again, I get questions from people who DO NOT publish their GEDCOMs after they find me on WCP.  You have posted your GEDCOM on WCP, haven't you?  I do reply to all of these e-mails, but...  You have posted your GEDCOM on WCP, haven't you?

Ford - Simpson

Nineveh Ford, my great great grandfather, was the first of my ancestors to cross the Oregon Trail.  In 1878 he was interviewed  in Salem, Oregon by a writer who's name is given as only "AB".  The result of that interview is the narrative called The Pioneer Road Makers/Builders.  In his narrative Nineveh relates his experiences while traveling from Independence, MO to Oregon City, OR.  He failed to mention that his younger brother, Ephraim Ford, was with him.

You'll notice that his name is spelled "Ninevah" in the photo above.  It is spelled this way by many people, but HE spelled it "Nineveh".  I have copies of his signature on many documents, and it is spelled "Nineveh" on his tombstone.

In 1848 Nineveh married Martha Jane Simpson who's family came to Oregon in 1846.  Ephraim married Martha Jane Garrison in 1851.

Sager - Carney
Catherine Carney (Sager) Pringle

Catherine Carney (Sager) Pringle was 9 years old when her family started across the Oregon Trail.  On the way she gained a sister, and lost both parents.  She also had a leg crushed when she fell from a wagon, and it ran over her.  She was at the Whitman Mission when the Indians killed the Whitmans and her two brothers.  Click on her image to read her story; a small sample of it is below. (this link repaired 4-29-01) Click on her name to go to her entry in my GEDCOM.

Chapter I
ON THE PLAINS IN 1844
My father was one of the restless ones who are not content to remain in one place long at a time. Late in the fall of 1838 we emigrated from Ohio to Missouri. Our first halting place was on Green River, but the next year we took a farm in Platte County. He engaged in farming and blacksmithing, and had a wide reputation for ingenuity. Anything they needed, made or mended, sought his shop. In 1843, Dr. Whitman came to Missouri. The healthful climate induced my mother to favor moving to Oregon. I(E)mmigration was the theme all winter, and we decided to start for Oregon. Late in 1843 father sold his property and moved near St. Joseph, and in April, 1844, we started across the plains. The first encampments were a great pleasure to us children. We were five girls and two boys, ranging from the girl baby to be born on the way to the oldest boy, hardly old enough to be any help.

Benjamin and Nancy (Cooper) Simpson

Benjamin Simpson was the son of my great great great grandfather William Simpson.  William and his wife, Mary Kimsey Simpson must have had their hands full bringing their children and their families across the Oregon Trail.  One daughter,  Cassia Casey Simpson Kimsey, died on the journey; leaving a husband and 6 year old daughter.  Nineveh Ford married William's daughter Martha Jane Simpson June 15, 1848 in Marion County, OR.

Samuel Leonidas Simpson

Samuel Leonidas Simpson (son of Benjamin and Nancy Simpson), was only 6 months old when his family crossed the Oregon Trail.

Rowland and Sarah (King) Chambers
1845

Rowland and Sarah Chambers, and two small children, crossed the Oregon Trail in 1845.  Sarah died on the trail in Central Oregon.  Rowland married Sarah's sister, Lovisa (Louisa?), in 1846.  She also crossed in 1845.

My connection to this family ties back to my 3gr grandfather William Simpson by the marriage of Rowland and Lovisa's daughter Julia to Larkin Price; grandson of William Simpson.  Click on Rowland's name to go to his entry in my GEDCOM.

James and Mary (Miller) Fulkerson
1847 cont.
James and Mary Fulkerson, nine children, a son-in-law, one grandson, two of James' sisters and a brother-in-law crossed the Oregon Trail in 1847.  Mary, twenty year old son Frederick, and son-in-law Hiram Dorris died on the trail.  James remarried in 1848 as did his daughter Elizabeth.

I have at least two connections to this Fulkerson line.  The Leeper middle name of Nancy comes from her maternal grandmother; Mary Leeper a cousin of Hugh Leeper Brown who crossed in 1846.  He connects to my father's side of the family through the Blakely's.  On my mother's side is Alvis Kimsey who lost his first wife on their 1846 crossing.  He connects to me through both the Kimsey's and Simpson's.

The William and Susan (Higgins) Cooper Family
1848

William B. Cooper and Susan Higgins  were the parents of Nancy Cooper who married Benjamin Simpson; the brother of my great great great grandfather William Simpson.  I don't know when they departed Missouri to cross the Oregon Trail or if I have all of the Cooper children listed (there are more but I can't put them on the Oregon Trail), but William didn't make it.  He is buried somewhere on the plains on the trail.

Barbara, William R., Philomen and Jaly married in Oregon 1850-1860, and I don't know how or when the spouses arrived in Oregon.  It is unknown if Susan remarried.  Click on William's name below to go to his entry in my GEDCOM on WorldConnect Project.

William M. and Mary E. (Inman) Mazingo family
1870-73

I'm not sure just when this family crossed the plains, but it was between 1870 and 1873.  This will be a brick wall for somebody as William's parents died when he was young, and he and a sister were taken in by the Mazingo family.  He took the name, but was not adopted.

Mary Elizabeth Inman is the 4th cousin of Joel Cowan Inman who crossed in 1852 (see above).  This family connects, by marriage, to my Montgomery line.

Hi Cecil:     Love the Oregon Trail stuff you post  --  just none of it pertains to
us.  Most of my ancestors came to Oregon by train or car, and a few went
to California first via wagon as they didn't have money for the train.

I am a descendant of Oregon trail pioneers.  My ancestors came west over the Oregon Tail in 1862/1863.  The surnames are Wisdom and Gess.  Two Gess boys settled in Boise, Idaho while the Wisdom family traveled on to Baker City, OR.  I have been researching my family for about 7-8 years.  Are you adding to your web site or is it only for your own lines?
    LS

    Sorry.  My lines only.
Cecil:I've been trying to just shut up and enjoy reading your comments because I'm on deadline with a new book right now, but I can stay silent no longer. Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your comments and appreciate your attitude.

Of course your ancestors and mine were at least well acquainted with each other, if not actually related (that part remains to be seen).  Since my Hursts and Grays had no other way to keep warm in the winter or pass the time on pleasant summer evenings, they added dozens to the population base every time someone married and managed to have descendents marry into just about every early Oregon family that passed their way. Thus, like you I am related to a large portion of the Pacific Northwest. Your ancestors frequently pop up in records pertaining to mine -- especially those who made the move from Linn and Benton Counties to Crook and Wasco Counties.

Whether we're related or not, I enjoy your updates and appreciate what you are doing by making the information so accessible. Keep up the good work!
